Juvederm XC is one of the most popular dermal fillers used today. It is a reputable soft tissue filler based on the active ingredient hyaluronic acid. Like all Juvederm products, it also contains a mild anesthetic to make injectable treatment more comfortable. This FDA-approved dermal filler is appropriate for several uses, from the eye area to the lips and lower face. By binding to water molecules in deeper layers of the skin, Juvederm XC increases the plumpness and contours of treated areas for months at a time.
What can Juvederm XC do for you?
With age, the skin degrades little by little. It isn’t just the skin that leads to concerning lines and wrinkles and changes in the very shape of the face, it is also the transformation of fatty tissue beneath the skin. On the face, there are fat pads under the eyes and across the cheeks. There is fatty tissue at the temples and around the mouth. In every one of these areas, the depletion of fat can result in cosmetic changes. Around the eyes, the decrease in skin firmness may result in under-eye bags. The loss of fat can result in a hollow appearance and dark circles. When the cheek area loses fat, contours flatten across the mid face and the lower face seems to widen. Juvederm XC can correct each of these changes, restoring a more youthful, energetic appearance.

How does Juvederm XC work?
Juvederm XC is composed of hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a naturally-occurring substance in the body. HA is responsible for maintaining the moisture levels of your skin cells – which creates a smooth, young and supple appearance.
Over time, your body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid diminishes. When Juvederm is injected into the skin, it replenishes the HA you’ve been missing, adding subtle volume just beneath the surface and smoothing out unwanted lines and folds.
Candidates: Are you ready for Juvederm XC?
Most adults can be excellent candidates for Juvederm injections. This product is so versatile that it can correct a variety of concerns in a single visit. The objective of treatment is to achieve a naturally rejuvenated look; people will notice that you appear refreshed but not that you’ve “had work done.” This is the magic of Juvederm. The product integrates smoothly into the skin so contours are boosted without looking puffy or bloated.
You don’t have to be interested in correcting the signs of aging to be a good candidate for Juvederm XC. Many of our patients seek this treatment to achieve better facial contours and proportions. An example of this is getting Juvederm to refine the shape of the jawline or chin, or getting injections to enhance the shape and fullness of the lips. There are a number of improvements that can be achieved with Juvederm XC beyond facial rejuvenation.
Cold Sores
If you have a history of cold sores or herpes, talk with your provider. There is a chance that injections could trigger an outbreak. The doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication to begin a few days before injections to prevent adverse reaction.
How can I prepare for my Juvederm XC® injection appointment?
Bruising is a common risk associated with any injectable treatment because any break in the skin can cause a bruise. To prepare for Juvederm XC treatment, then, patients may take steps to avoid substances that increase bruising risk by thinning the blood. Examples include anti-inflammatory medication and aspirin, fish oil, garlic, and alcohol.
If you are prone to bruising, you may take Arnica Montana beginning a few days before your treatment. Applying a cold pack to the skin for a few minutes before injections may also help by temporarily constricting the blood vessels.

What to expect
For a few days prior to your Juvederm XC treatments you will need to stop taking anti-inflammatory medications. You should also avoid wearing makeup the morning of your appointment.
When you arrive at our Houston office for your treatment, Dr. Wiener will review the procedure one final time – along with what to expect, potential side effects, and anticipated results. He will then numb the area with a topical anesthetic cream to ensure your maximum comfort.
Once the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. Wiener will inject Juvederm XC into the treatment area using a sterile syringe. Thanks to the medication’s smooth gel consistency, he will be able to use an ultra-thin needle.
In general, your entire Juvederm XC appointment should last about 30 minutes. Once it’s complete, you will be free to return to work and your normal daily routine right away.
After Your Appointment
There are some side effects associated with Juvederm XC, though they are very rare, mild and temporary. They include:
- Redness
- Tenderness
- Firmness
- Swelling
- Bruising
In addition, you should not touch or massage your face for a few days to avoid disrupting the medication – though you can continue applying makeup normally. You should also avoid exposure to extreme heat, cold and the sun up to two weeks after your injections.

THE CHANGE
The results of Juvederm XC are extraordinary – but they are also temporary. As such, repeat injections will be necessary to maintain your new look.
Over time, your body will naturally absorb the medication and your results will diminish. This process takes longer with Juvederm when compared to other fillers thanks to its cross-linked properties and smooth gel consistency. In general, it takes about six to nine months for your body to absorb the filler, though some of our Houston patients have reported results that endure up to one year.
There is no wait time to see your results! As soon as your provider begins to inject the target area, the hyaluronic acid in Juvederm XC starts drawing in water molecules. The HA particles bind to those molecules and immediately plump and shape the skin. This enables your provider to achieve just the right amount of fullness and volume, and it allows you to observe and approve of your results before leaving the office.
Juvederm XC and Voluma XC are both Juvederm products. This means that they're both made using hyaluronic acid and have a proven record of success. We offer both treatments because the products differ slightly. You could view Juvederm XC as a general type of dermal filler. It's made for use in multiple areas, including the delicate area around the eyes, the lips, and moderate facial lines and creases. Voluma XC is formulated with hyaluronic acid but in a thicker gel base. That, along with the particle sizes of hyaluronic acid, creates a more structural feel. This is the intention because Juvederm Voluma XC has been designed specifically for the correction of volume loss in the mid-face. Both products have similar post-treatment side effects and care guidelines. Both are conveniently received in a short office visit that lasts 20 to 45 minutes, and both can last many months. Which you should get will depend primarily on the concerns you'd like to address.
You can! It's important to understand why. The entire line of Juvederm fillers is made with a base, active ingredient of hyaluronic acid. For this reason, it's perfectly safe and acceptable to receive both at the same time. You can even receive Juvederm injections and Botox or Jeuveau at the same visit because the two classes of FDA-approved injectable drugs work in different ways that do not interfere with each other. Where you want to be mindful is in the use of multiple dermal fillers that use different base ingredients. In this instance, two ingredients may not mix well together and may result in unwanted cosmetic or physical side effects. Here in our Houston office, you needn't worry about this. We only use Juvederm fillers so can help you achieve your cosmetic goals with a full sense of confidence in our chosen products.
It's understandable that you want the results of your injectable treatments to last as long as possible. There are no studies that confirm any strategy as being completely effective for every person. However, there are suggestions that many people have used successfully. These include:
- Receive comprehensive facial rejuvenation using a combination of wrinkle reducers. The rejuvenating effects of dermal fillers may last longer when combined with a neuromodulator like Botox or Jeuveau. This is because neuromodulators reduce the intensity of facial movements. Where there is less facial movement, a dermal filler may last longer.
- Stay hydrated! Juvederm dermal fillers work by binding to water molecules. Having adequate stores of water molecules in your body at the time of treatment and after, you support optimal results that can last longer than if your skin were not naturally plumped by adequate hydration.
- Protect your skin from the sun. Sun exposure breaks down collagen more quickly and also can dry out the skin. Reducing sun exposure and wearing sunscreen and hats can slow down your cosmetic aging process.
- Use retinol products. Avoiding sun exposure helps prevent collagen breakdown. Using retinol helps promote optimal collagen production! Healthy collagen production helps maintain firm, plump skin.
