WHAT IS BOTOX®?

Botox is the name-brand neuromodulator that most people recognize. This product is derived from a purified form of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This injectable, used since the early 2000s, smooths dynamic lines and creases by preventing muscle contractions. First used to reduce frown lines between the eyebrows, Botox is now one of the most widely used neuromodulators to be developed.

WHAT IS JEUVEAU?

Jeuveau is a neuromodulator, a type of injectable wrinkle-reducer that works by relaxing muscle contractions. The product is the newest treatment for dynamic wrinkles to be approved by the FDA. It is formulated with the same purified neurotoxin as Botox.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOTOX AND JEUVEAU?

Both Botox and Jeuveau are made from a purified form of Clostridium botulinum. The drugs work in the same manner, by preventing muscles from contracting and thereby releasing creases to become smooth. One of the primary differences between the two is that Botox was discovered accidentally when patients receiving therapeutic doses of Clostridium botulinum showed signs of wrinkle reduction. Since the approval of Botox, the drug’s uses have expanded from the correction of glabellar lines to a nonsurgical brow lift, migraine treatment, solution for excessive sweating, and more. This has required extensive clinical testing. What makes Jeuveau unique is that this drug was developed solely for cosmetic usage.

IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR COSMETIC INJECTABLE TREATMENTS

Adults of all ages can get injectable treatments to enhance their appearance. Historically, Botox and other neuromodulators have been used correctively to reduce the appearance of dynamic wrinkles like frown lines. More recently, this type of treatment has become a popular method of preventing premature aging. Adults who are not allergic to the ingredients in Botox or Jeuveau and who understand what this treatment can achieve are usually great candidates for injectable wrinkle-reduction or “prejuvenation.”

How to choose a BOTOX & Jeuveau provider

BOTOX and Jeuveau injections are available everywhere lately – from medical spas to parties to plastic surgery offices. However, to avoid complications and undesirable results, it’s important to be selective when choosing your provider.

A board-certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Wiener, is the ideal option. These individuals have experience performing cosmetic procedures and they understand the nuances of facial aesthetics and balance. They know how to place the medications to obtain the precise results you want – while avoiding an artificial, frozen or overdone look.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR MY FIRST JEUVEAU TREATMENT

Before undergoing Jeuveau treatment, you will have a consultation with a board-certified provider. During this visit, it is necessary to disclose if you have had any other neuromodulator treatment in the previous 4 months. Your provider also needs to know if you have had an allergic reaction to other neuromodulators or have a muscle condition such as ALS.

To decrease the risk of bleeding and bruising, we encourage patients to avoid blood-thinning medications and substances, including alcohol, before scheduling their wrinkle-reducing injections.

WHAT TO DO AFTER BOTOX TREATMENT

After Botox treatment, we want the injected product to stay in the treatment area. To achieve this, patients should:

  • Refrain from touching or manipulating the treatment area for a few hours following injections. Do not rub the face or lie down for about 4 hours after your appointment.
  • Do not schedule other facial treatments such as chemical peels or laser resurfacing for at least 10 days after injections.
  • Avoid strenuous activities, including heavy lifting or intense exercise for 6 hours after Botox injections.
  • Patients are also encouraged not to drink or take aspirin around the time of their injections. This decreases the chances of bleeding and bruising.

HOW LONG DO COSMETIC INJECTABLE TREATMENT TAKE?

Injectable treatments are popular in part because they are so convenient. After your initial consultation, cosmetic injections typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. After a brief review of objectives, injections themselves take just a few minutes.

SKIN CONDITIONS TREATED WITH INJECTABLES

These are the lines and creases that form as a result of muscle movement. Examples include crow’s feet, frown lines, and the horizontal lines that develop on the forehead as we age. Some of the common complaints that can be corrected with neuromodulator wrinkle reducers include:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Bunny lines on the bridge of the nose
  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Heavy, drooping eyebrows
  • Horizontal bands on the neck

THE INJECTIONSWhat to expect

When you arrive at our Houston office for your BOTOX or Jeuveau injections, you will meet with Dr. Wiener to review the procedure, potential side effects, and expected outcomes.

From there, you will sit in a reclining chair in the treatment room. Dr. Wiener will ask you to contract your facial muscles so that he can determine the appropriate placement of your injections. He will then mark the injection locations to guide him through your treatment.

Although anesthesia is not necessary with BOTOX or Jeuveau, Dr. Wiener may numb certain areas with a cold compress or topical cream to ensure a comfortable experience. Any discomfort you do experience will be extremely minimal and short-lived.

The actual injections take about ten minutes and will involve Dr. Wiener injecting the BOTOX or Jeuveau directly into your muscles using a very fine needle. Once your treatment is complete, you will be free to return to work and your normal daily routine right away, making this a true “lunchtime” procedure.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS FROM MY JEUVAEU TREATMENT?

Portrait of beautiful fashionable woman wearing white top Neuromodulators take time to achieve their full effects on contracted muscles. You may begin to see improvement in 2 to 3 days. Lines and creases will progressively lessen, reaching their peak 7 to 10 days after your appointment. Providers are conservative with their use of Botox and Jeuveau so some patients may need a minor touch-up to achieve the best results.

JEUVEAU SIDE EFFECTS

Because Jeuveau and Botox have the same active ingredient, their side effects and risks are similar. Because the neurotoxin is administered into the area of a contracted muscle just beneath the skin, side effects are usually limited to the site of injections. These include temporary redness and swelling. Some people develop minor bruising. These side effects resolve within a few hours but could take up to a day. There is a possibility that a mild headache or flu-like symptoms could occur after Jeuveau or Botox injections. This typically lasts less than 48 hours if it develops. There is a risk of eyelid drooping related to neuromodulator treatment. Studies suggest that drooping may occur when the product migrates from the injection site. To prevent this, patients are advised to avoid touching the treatment area and to postpone exercise for a day or two after receiving injectable treatment.

ARE BOTOX INJECTIONS SAFE?

Botox is made of the protein that causes botulism. Understandably, that can sound frightening. However, scientists put a lot of work into perfecting the dosage and timing of injections to ensure safety. Since the late 20th Century, millions of Botox injections have been administered in the U.S. alone. So long as injections are prepared and performed by a board-certified, trained professional, there is very little risk of adverse reaction. The effects of the neurotoxin remain localized in the muscle to achieve a desirable outcome. It may give you a sense of assurance knowing that the dosage administered during Botox treatments is much lower than the therapeutic use of Clostridium botulinum that has been common for many years.
