What is a lip augmentation?
For many years, men and women have looked at full lips as a sign of beauty and youthfulness. Regardless of age, the lips can have attractive curves and symmetry. Lip augmentation is a cosmetic procedure, either surgical or non-surgical, that can achieve a fuller, more defined, more attractive mouth. Not only does lip enhancement subtly increase lip size and shape but this treatment also perfects the harmony between the mouth and other facial features.
What can a lip augmentation do for you?
- Define the border of your lips
- Create a full + voluminous pout
- Restore balance to uneven + asymmetrical lips
- Sculpt a more feminine mouth
Who is a candidate for lip augmentation?
All cosmetic treatments require a lot of consideration and responsibility. Good candidates for lip augmentation have realistic expectations for their potential outcome and a desire to improve their natural appearance. Lip augmentation is often sought by adults whose lips are naturally thin and without many shapes or whose lips have lost shape and volume with age. This treatment may not be ideal for people with lupus, diabetes, active cold sores, or who are pregnant or nursing.
Your Lip Augmentation Options
There are three primary Houston lip augmentation options available: Juvederm, fat injections and lip implants. Here’s an overview of each approach:
Juvederm is a popular, safe, and non-surgical lip enhancement solution. The filler can be placed precisely to achieve a wide range of aesthetic goals – including enhancing the border of your lips and increasing overall volume.
Fat injections involve extracting fat cells from another area of your body, processing it, and re-injecting it into the lips. Dr. Wiener does not perform this procedure because it often produces lumpy and inconsistent results.
Lip implants offer a permanent way to increase lip volume. The procedure involves creating a small incision and placing GORE-TEX, SoftForm or AlloDerm implants. Dr. Wiener does not recommend this approach because there’s an increased risk of infection and sensation changes.
How should I prepare for my lip augmentation procedure?
The primary concern related to injectable lip augmentation is bleeding and bruising. To minimize this risk, we advise patients to avoid certain medications and supplements in the week before their appointment. Substances that can thin the blood include aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, vitamin E, and alcohol.
Juvederm: Dr. Wiener’s “Go-To” Lip Augmentation Technique
Dr. Wiener typically recommends Juvederm injections to his lip augmentation clients. If you are looking for lip enhancement in Houston this is the place to come. This is due to the myriad benefits offered by this approach, including:
- Beautiful + natural cosmetic results
- Long-lasting outcomes (6-12 months)
- No downtime or recovery period
- Quick, 5-minute procedure
What is Juvederm made from?
Juvéderm soft tissue fillers are made of tiny, cross-linked particles of hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring sugar compound that helps lock moisture in the joints, eyes, and skin. There are several Juvéderm products available today, each made with a particular size of HA particles in a gel base. The variations between products in this line give each a unique consistency. For soft, full lips with smooth definition around the border, experienced providers utilize thinner hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvéderm Vollure. However, other products may also be included to create more volume in the body of the lips.
How does Juvederm compare to other lip fillers available?
Juvéderm is one of the most popular brands of dermal fillers to be used for lip enhancement. The other popular dermal filler for lip enhancement, Restylane, is also made with hyaluronic acid. Both products are FDA-approved for lip augmentation. Both contain lidocaine to make the treatment more comfortable. Both are also similar in terms of results, lasting up to 12 months. Our patients appreciate that Juvéderm gives them two options to choose from, which means outstanding results whether it is more fullness and shape that is desired or there are tiny vertical lines around the lips that need to be smoothed.
Is Juvederm safe? Are there any risk?
Juvéderm hyaluronic acid dermal fillers have been used for several years with very few adverse reactions. Hyaluronic acid is made by the body so it is not associated with a risk of an allergic reaction. Regardless of the safety of the filler itself, it is vital to have lip enhancing injections performed only by a trained, licensed professional. There are several small blood vessels in the lips. Without great care, injections could nick or be placed into one of these vessels, causing complications such as excessive, prolonged swelling and bruising. Most people who undergo lip enhancement with a board-certified professional achieve attractive, natural-looking results with only mild, temporary side effects like redness and swelling.
HOW LONG WILL MY LIP AUGMENTATION RESULTS LAST WITH JUVEDERM?
Juvederm products are made with hyaluronic acid in a soft gel base. Every person's body may metabolize this substance at a slightly different rate. With that in mind, the manufacturer states that lip augmentation results generally last from six to 12 months. Fortunately, the breakdown of the dermal filler occurs over time. This will allow you to observe the process and plan your touch-ups accordingly.
HOW OFTEN CAN YOU RECEIVE JUVEDERM TREATMENTS?
You can receive Juvederm lip treatment as often as every six months. This will depend on the product that is used for your treatment and the speed at which your body metabolizes the hyaluronic acid. Some patients need only one treatment every year or two. During your consultation, we will discuss the product that will be used for your lip enhancement and when you may want to schedule your next treatment to maintain your ideal results.
WILL MY JUVEDERM RESULTS LOOK NATURAL?
We've all seen lip augmentation results that look overly plump and overly puffy. Our objective in performing lip augmentation is to avoid that kind of look. When you visit Dr. Wiener for injectable lip augmentation, you can expect close attention to be given to your overall facial shape and the relationship between your lips, cheeks, chin, nose, and other facial features. At first, your lips may look puffier or fuller than you had anticipated, but this is simple swelling. After the inflammation settles, your lips should appear beautifully shaped and defined.
IS JUVEDERM PAINFUL?
You can expect your Juvederm lip augmentation treatment to be minimally uncomfortable. Before beginning the injection process, we apply a topical anesthetic cream to the skin. After a few minutes, your sensation will be nicely diminished so you can receive your treatment with virtually no pain at all. The product itself also contains an anesthetic that subtly numbs the treatment area.
The Main Event
What to expect during your lip augmentation
To begin your lip augmentation, Dr. Wiener will apply a topical cream to numb your mouth. If you are particularly sensitive, he will also inject an anesthetic into the area.
From there, he will inject Juvederm into your lips using a very fine needle. He will use a conservative hand to ensure results that look natural – never artificial. The entire process will take about 5 minutes, with most patients requiring a single syringe.
Once the Juvederm is in place, Dr. Wiener will gently massage the area to ensure that no bumps are present. He will also apply ice to minimize any swelling.
After Your Injections…
Here’s what to expect after your Juvederm lip injections at Dr. Wiener’s Houston office:
Minimal Side Effects
Some patients experience minor swelling and bruising at the injection site. Although these effects can endure up to one week, they usually dissipate within a day or two.
One of the best things about Juvederm is that the results appear immediately. As such, you will be able to see your fuller lips right away.
After your Juvederm lip augmentation, you will be free to resume your normal daily routine and exercise regimen right away. You can even wear lipstick and lip gloss immediately.
Juvederm cosmetic results can last six to twelve months, at which point you will require a maintenance visit to preserve your new look.
