Understand how Botox works
Botox is one of many cosmetic injectables on the market. However, as a neuromodulator, it works differently than most hyaluronic acid dermal fillers such as Juvéderm and Radiesse. Botox works by addressing the muscles of the face. The muscles that tense and cause these wrinkles and lines to form can be relaxed with an injection of Botox. This, in turn, reduces the appearance of these dynamic wrinkles over several days, and the results can be enjoyed for up to nine months.
Botox is formulated with botulinum toxin type A. This injectable is used in many other areas of medicine, not just cosmetic treatments. Botox has been approved by the FDA for years for cosmetic enhancement of the face when injected into troublesome muscles.
What to expect during your Botox appointment
First, patients need to consult with Dr. Thomas Wiener, our board-certified plastic surgeon, to determine if their needs can be sufficiently addressed with the use of cosmetic injectables such as Botox. Then, the areas of insertion are planned according to the muscles responsible for the formation of wrinkles and folds. Injections are made quickly, and patients can return to their daily routine with little interruption. Over several days, the dynamic wrinkles and folds are improved, and patients can schedule a future appointment for reinjection to maintain the results as long as possible. More severe cases of wrinkles and folds may still require plastic surgery, but with mild to moderate cases, many patients can find results with Botox injections.
