Q: What is gynecomastia
A: Gynecomastia is enlargement of the male breast. There is no specific size, it is enlargement to the point of being bothersome.
Q: How does Dr. Wiener treat gynecomastia?
A: In my Houston clinic, I first perform a thorough medical history to find out if there are any inciting causes, such as anabolic steroids, hormones or hormone imbalance, or certain medications. Then, if this is established gynecomastia, surgical treatment is generally needed. This involves liposuction of the fatty component along with direct excision of the more dense breast tissue.
Q: What is recovery like and what are my postop restrictions?
A: As with most plastic surgery, postoperative restrictions are important to prevent complications such as bleeding, which may require surgery to correct. For the first four weeks postop, there is no exercise or lifting over eight pounds. After that, exercise can be resumed. Most guys get back to work within a few days.
Q: Do I have to wear any compression garments after surgery?
A: A thin compression vest is worn for at least six weeks after surgery. This is easily hidden under normal shirts.
