Does breast augmentation hurt?
Q: Does breast augmentation surgery hurt?
A: With the anesthesia that I use for breast augmentation in my Houston clinic, after the patient is asleep, I place local anesthetic nerve blocks around the ribs, which are called intercostal blocks. This numbs the nerves and provides long lasting pain relief.
Q: How long does the pain relief last from the intercostal blocks?
A: Many patients tell me they have minimal to no pain for the day of surgery, and if discomfort occurs, it is often described as pressure or tightness.
Q: Do you also prescribe pain pills for any discomfort?
A: I prescribe the most effective pain medication, shown in many studies and in my 25 year experience in practice to be the best in relieving any residual discomfort.
Q: Is there anything else you do to decrease postoperative discomfort after breast implant surgery?
A: The postop massage or displacement movements which you will be instructed in on the first postop day also greatly reduce discomfort.
